Graham said:

We both love the movie. We grew up with the film and the more we started to explore the true stories behind the project the more we saw that there was an opportunity to tell a broader story and that included many perspectives that weren’t present the first time, but with the same sense of humor and unassuming fun that everyone loves about the movie.

The series will feature themes that were not explored in the film on how the way baseball has impacted the lives of black and queer women. Jacobson pointed out:

This is definitely something that the Penny Marshall movie hinted at, but we really wanted to expand it. Max’s character is based on three women who ended up playing with men, and it’s an incredible story for all three of them. The more we researched the more we expanded these characters, making it more exciting to tell their stories with a modern approach.

Graham added that it will be an important element of the story:

In many of the pre-Stonewall stories, you don’t hear many homosexual stories with a happy ending. For the most part, someone came up with something really remarkable and then they were killed or something terrible happened. This is a story about people who may not have fallen in love with the people the world wanted, but had a dream and found a way to fall in love and do what they wanted. It is something heroic and fantastic, and still relevant now as it was in 1992 or 1942. It was a huge part to want to tell a complicated story with many layers, but with so much joy at its core.

Will reiterated:

Every woman we’ve talked to and every story we’ve read know they were living in the most turbulent times in history, when things were radically changing around them, as they are now. All the rules were changing and somehow, in the midst of that change, they managed to find themselves and a clear idea of who they were. And they got to play baseball, which is what they wanted to do most of all. They loved the sound of the club, of the shoes. For me, and I think also for Abbi, it is something that can change your life to be able to immerse yourself in those stories. We just want to share that feeling with everyone else.
