Wimbledon: Will the Grand Slam tournament degenerate into a show event without world ranking points? Cameron Norrie sounds the alarm

ATP and WTA decided on Friday not to award world ranking points for the classic lawn this year and to delete the points from last year that needed to be defended from the ranking.

This historic move came in response to Wimbledon organizers’ decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players from the third Grand Slam tournament of the year due to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.

Top British player Cameron Norrie believes that the importance and reputation of the pitch highlight at the All England Club will suffer.

“I think that many top players will not compete. They will rest and also prepare for the hard court events. Especially those who are not so concerned about the money,” said the eleventh in the ATP world rankings.

Stephens: Things happened behind the scenes…

Norrie fears that Wimbledon could degenerate into a kind of show tournament. “It’s hard for me to have a home Grand Slam but not being able to score points. Of course the situation is complicated, but I would have preferred to play for points,” said the 26-year-old.

The Hungarian Márton Fucsovics had previously expressed his incomprehension about the decision by ATP and WTA: “No ranking points in Wimbledon and the ranking points from 2021 will be lost. No chance to defend them. Are you serious about ATP? ?” he wrote on his Instagram story.

Sloane Stephens, on the other hand, struck a different note: “I think the decision was the right one,” said the American after her three-set victory at the French Open over the German Jule Niemeier.

“Behind the scenes I think some things happened that the media have no idea about,” said the 29-year-old, without elaborating on the point: “If you’re backed into a corner, that’s all you can do . I think that’s why the decision was made – and I support it.”
