When Rodrygo Rejects Karim Benzema’s Penalty

Madrid

Rodrygo could have scored a hat-trick when Real Madrid knocked out Manchester City. Karim Benzema offered Rodrygo to take a penalty but was refused.

Rodrygo inspired Madrid’s comeback in a 3-1 win over City at the Santiago Bernabeu on Thursday (5/5) WIB. The young Brazilian came on in the second half and then scored twice to make it 2-1 at the end of normal time.

The match then went to extra time as both teams had a 5-5 aggregate balance. In the 93rd minute, the referee pointed to the spot after Benzema was violated by Ruben Dias when he greeted Rodrygo’s crossing from the right side of the penalty box.

In the recording of The Great Goal, Benzema asked “what do you want?” to Rodrygo so he could complete his performance with a hat-trick. The 21-year-old footballer refused to be Benzema himself who finally executed the penalty kick.

France’s top striker fired a right-footed effort into the bottom corner of the Manchester City goal, rounding Ederson Moraes who fell in the wrong direction. The score changed to 3-1 for Real Madrid’s advantage as well as ensuring qualification to the Champions League final.

For Karim Benzema, the goal was his tenth goal in the Champions League knockout phase. Benzema equaled the record Cristiano Ronaldo achieved in the 2017/18 season, also when he led Real Madrid to the title.
