Werner Adler lost his last fight

Werner Adler

After a long illness, our founding member of the Judo department, trainer and friend is Werner Adler
died in the night from May 9th to May 10th, 2022 at the age of 74.

In 1974, Werner was one of the judoka who wanted to make their sport accessible to a wider audience and quickly founded the judo department of VfR Büttgen. At that time, Werner had been doing judo for a number of years and brought his experience to the newly established department. From the foundation
of the judo department in VfR Büttgen until his death, he was active as a fighter, trainer, examiner and member of the department board in all matters relating to his sport. He has spent countless hours on and off the mat, encouraging and challenging every judoka within the scope of their individual possibilities. Due to his constant further training, he was always technically up to date. The fighting was particularly important to him and he has attended tournaments with “his” judoka for decades, has his judo students
motivated to show off her skills on the mat and was always willing to lend his time and knowledge to others.

He has received numerous honors for his services to judo, in 2013 he was awarded the 4th Dan; In 2019 he was honored for special services in sport and received the silver badge of honor from the KSB.

With his creative ideas, he played a key role in shaping the department’s offerings, both in terms of judo-specific and other leisure activities. Unforgotten are the trips to the youth hostel, where the children were reliably woken up by Werner’s singing performances, the many tournaments in which he always stood up for the fighters and justice and of course his unique judo training, which introduced so many athletes to the sport of judo with its special features brought close.

The fact that the judo department sees itself as a big judo family is largely due to Werner Adler. We are losing a committed judoka, to whom we are infinitely grateful for his commitment, but also a good friend, without whom we would not be who we are.

Our thoughts are with Werner’s family. We wish her strength to get through this difficult time.

Dear Werner, we miss your happy and inimitable way and you will always have a place in our midst!

VfR Büttgen 1912 eV

The Judo department has a book of condolences for Werner Adler on its HP page!
