Swan, who ranks 384th in the ATP rankings, conceded 3-6.0-6 in Robin Hassem (ATP 265) from the Netherlands in the first round of the main event.
The swan used one of the seven breakballs in the match, while Hasse used all six.
Both athletes met in the second round of qualification yesterday and in that match Hasse was also in two sets – 7-6 (8: 6), 6-4.
At the end of the qualifying round, Gulbis smiled lucky and was the only “lucky loser” to enter the main event.
So far, Gulbis and Häss had met once – in 2013, when Gulbis defeated Häss in the first round of the main event of the ATP World Tour 500 series in the Netherlands in Rotterdam with the result 6-2, 6-1.
Last week, Gulbis reached the main event of the Vicenza “Challenger” tournament, but did not continue the tournament after winning the selection. At the ATP level, Latvians have not participated in the main tournaments since last summer.
