Because of the Russian exclusion: Wimbledon threatens tough sanctions

According to a media report, the tennis tournament in Wimbledon is threatened with severe sanctions after the exclusion of Russian and Belarusian professionals this summer. As the “Daily Mail” reported, the ranking status of the Grand Slam tournament could be withdrawn. Then the participating tennis professionals would no longer receive points for the world rankings.

  • According to the “Daily Mail”, the head of the women’s tennis organization WTA, Steve Simon, has already spoken out in favor of it. It is therefore expected that the ATP will also support such a step.
  • Several international tennis stars had previously criticized the exclusion of professionals from Russia and Belarus as a result of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. “It’s very unfair to my colleagues,” said Spanish world star Rafael Nadal. “What can the poor do for it?” Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic also spoke out against it.
  • Among others, the Russian world number two Daniil Medvedev is affected by the exclusion.
