Belinda Bencic fails in the second round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome. The Olympic champion, seeded number 12, has to admit defeat to the American Amanda Anisimova (WTA 32) 6: 7 (5: 7), 1: 6.
The early exit in the Italian capital is a setback after Bencic started the clay season very well. She won the tournament in Charleston, in Madrid she lost in three sets in the round of 16 to the top ten player and later tournament winner Ons Jabeur.
A preliminary decision was made in the extremely controversial first sentence, which alone lasted almost an hour and a quarter. Bencic fends off three set balls, but is still defeated in the tie-break. In the second round, the 25-year-old from Eastern Switzerland has no chance after a quick 0:3.
She also failed to take revenge for the defeat at the Australian Open against Anisimova.
Teichmann further in the high
On the other hand, Jil Teichmann (WTA 29) continues to impress in Rome. In the second round, the left-hander defeated world number 6 and last year’s finalist Karolina Pliskova 6:2, 4:6, 6:4. Teichmann reached the semi-finals in Madrid last week.
Now the 24-year-old from Zeeland will meet Jelena Rybakina (WTA 17) from Kazakhstan in the round of 16. Teichmann clearly won the only duel so far last week in Madrid. (SDA)
