The facilities of the Príncipe de Asturias municipal sports center in San Pedro del Pinatar have hosted the celebration of the Spanish University Judo Championship (CEU) in which the judokas of the Catholic University, led by the Olympian Alberto Gaitero, win four golds and one bronze that break the barrier of the 141 medals achieved in 2019 in the university championships, adding this year a total of 144.
The men’s medal of the Catholic University fell into the hands of the Olympic judoka in Tokyo 2020 Alberto Gaitero, who dominated the -73 kg category and won the final against Iker Uranga of the University of Deusto.
In the women’s section, the judoka Mireia Lapuerta won the gold in a brilliant way in the -48 kg final against Eva Pérez from the Alfonso X El Sabio University. In -57 kg, Sonia Montero was also proclaimed champion in her last duel against Carolina Rivero from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and María Cabas achieved the last women’s medal for the UCAM with her bronze in -70 kg.
These results mean that the UCAM concludes with the best record of the Spanish University Judo Championship, which has earned it its fourth gold medal and fifth overall in the competition.
This has been the sixteenth CEU of the nineteen that the Catholic University of Murcia organizes this year in the Region. An effort at an organizational level without precedent in the history of Spanish university sports that UCAM makes on the occasion of its 25th anniversary.
With twenty-two Spanish University Championships held out of the twenty-seven that will be held in the 2022 edition, UCAM remains the leader in the CEU medal table with 144 medals (97 gold, 26 silver and 21 bronze).
More than 200 athletes from 55 universities from all over Spain have participated in the tournament, supported by family and friends who have come to San Pedro del Pinatar and have filled and colored the stands of the municipal sports center.
