Saint-Germain puts the champion down

Terre Blanche without ter

Tom Auvray squats next to his bag. Blow one, then two blows. Swallows a large sip of water, while continuing to release the tension and bring down his pulse. “Just a minute, and I’m yours”, he slips to those waiting for his reaction, camera on tripod and microphone in hand. Remanence of a match which has just opposed him to Thibault Vergnetand where his victory meant the elimination of the two-time defending champion.

It has been sung a thousand times, the verse of the eighth which eliminates the first, as soon as the match play phase begins. Sung in all tones, all rhythms, but always with this impression of thunder in a clear sky. This Friday, in the quarter-finals of the French First Division Men’s Team Championship, lightning, launched by Saint Germain from the top of the last qualifying spot, hit White Earth.

The first detonation occurred in the morning, during the two foursomes. Well done against Thomas Perrot et Tom Auvray, Tom Gueant et Quentin Tiberi saw their opponents return to their height, then pass in front. The match, tight to the point of being tied at the start of the 18th, finally turned in favor of Saint-Germain, thanks to a final birdie.

In the second game, Valentin Luna et Romain Payet released their gala putting, to count up to five holes in advance, at the start of the 12. But Paul Beauvy et Martin Couvra did not let themselves be done, chaining birdies and solid putts to be only a hole behind at the start of the 18th. Unfortunately for them, an out-of-bounds face-off was right for their good comeback. Saint-Germain, for his part, left for lunch at 2-0.

Hugo Riboud qualified Biarritz by winning his match.

In the five singles of the afternoon, Terre Blanche obtained quick victories, thanks to Tom Gueant7&6 on Pierre Nouailhac, Paul Beauvy6&5 sut Thomas Perrotet Kylian Cavdar3&2 on Jules Lauer. But the Var equation did not get any easier, and especially not after the defeat of Martin Couvrain the lead match, of a hole against Valentin Luna.

All eyes then converged on the match between Tom Auvray et Thibault Vergnet. The latter, 1 down at the start of the 18th, had a final opportunity to snatch an extension, but his ball could only go around the hole. And Tom Auvray was able to breathe. And breathe again.

The solid afternoon of Biarritz

Their breath, the Saint-Germanois will use it against Biarritz, Saturday in the semi-finals. The finalists of the last edition made the difference against the promoted, and neighbor of Pont Royalle Manville Estate, in the singles of the afternoon. The morning of foursomes, very balanced, indeed ended with a score of parity. Adrian Mountain et Martin Engel had to push to 18 to win against Nathan Trey et Hugo Riboud. Same thing, but with a favorable outcome for the Basques, in the second foursome: victory of Joseph Linel et Faustin Labadie-Destenavesin the 18th, on Antoine Pelissier et Mathis André.

Tight until then, the scenario was noticeably decanted in the afternoon. In the single head, Philippe Schmohl has disposed of Romain Lanteri, 4&3. After the success of Nathan Trey on Louis Louchet3&2, only one point was missing for Biarritz to afford a new appearance in the last four.

A final victory that came throughHugo Riboud. The one who signs his reappearance at the Gounouilhouwhich he had last played in 2017, remained solid until the end to win against Louis Theillet2 up.

Saint-Cloud had to work

Tight, the 100% Ile-de-France quarter-final between Saint-Cloud et Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche ? In a pocket handkerchief, you mean… Out of seven matches, only one did not go until 17 (but until 16), two needed extra time to designate a winner, the last of which in course, which ultimately decided the fate of a meeting that never made victory for one team appear more likely than victory for the other.

The phenomenon appeared from the foursomes of the morning, shared between the two “Saints” on the same score of 2&1: victory of Paul Franquet et Nicholas Bauer for Saint-Nom against Julien Sale et Maxence Mugnierand equalization of Paul Piedelievre et Martin Perrigot for Saint-Cloud, against Oscar Couleau et Michael Najburg.

From tight, the meeting went to unbreathable in the afternoon, during the singles. Julien Sale et Maxence Mugnier certainly brought two points to Saint-Cloud, winning respectively 3&2 against Gregoire Hoyeau and 3&1 against Edouard Cereto. But Saint-Nom reacted, also in a double-edged fashion. First of all by the success ofOscar Couleau2&1 on Marin d’Harcourtthen by the point torn off at the 20th hole by Paul Franquet, Martin Piedelievre having put his ball in the water on the par 3 of the 2, thus missing a first match point.

The second then returned to Olivier Patience, who showed that when it comes to match point, his experience could pay off. In front of Michael Najburg, the former tennis player started by winning the 18th hole, to prolong the match. On par 4 of 1, he managed to get around the tree on the left of the fairway, before gently bouncing and then rolling his ball towards the flag. His victory, in stride, meant the qualification of Saint-Cloud, at the end of a trying day.

Cannes-Mougins sells Campagne

This quarter-final session was also trying for Cannes-Mougins, future adversary of the Clodoaldians. And this from the morning, which had almost completely become the afternoon whenHugo Amsallem et Hugo Archeron the 20th hole, put an end to the leading foursome which pitted them against Tom Vaillant et Filippo Serraand brought a first point to Campaign. A point of equalization, precisely, since Rafael Bobo-Lloret et Armand Papaziani opened the scoring for Cannes-Mougins, 4&2, against Romain Buttarazzi et Frederick Requier.

In the afternoon, if no match experienced a major change, the five singles all remained hanging until the end of the return. Cannes-Mougins has, however, gained an advantage by the successes of Tom Vaillant3&1 on Hugo Archerand D’Armand Papaziani4&2 on Carlos Hamou. But between the victory ofHugo Amsallem for the Nîmes, 3&2 against Nicolas Mullerand the battering ofAnthony de Schutter in front of Galaad Hoarauthe people of the Riviera found themselves in search of deliverance.

The latter arrived from the single head, where Tomeo Tissot defeated, at the end of the suspense and the 18th, the captain of Nîmes Romain Buttarazzi. Now the best qualifying team still in the running, Cannes will therefore face Saint-Cloud on Saturday in the semi-finals. A poster that is not cinema, but of which everyone expects a festival.
