Rutten did enter into talks with Ten Hag about the possibility of assisting him in Manchester, but ultimately declined the offer. According to Van Nistelrooij, he managed to “trigger” him to start working for PSV. “We talked in my room for 1.5 or 2 hours. Not just about football. There are also other things in life. Ruud has triggered me in that.”

PSV announced at the end of March that Van Nistelrooij and Rutten will be for the group next season. A few weeks later, Manchester United confirmed the long-standing speculation that Ten Hag will come over from Ajax next summer. It is not yet known who his assistants will be. Mitchell van der Gaag, Robin van Persie and the Englishman Steve McClaren are mentioned, among others. Van der Gaag is already assistant to Ten Hag at Ajax, Van Persie (ex-United) works in the youth academy of Feyenoord.
