Roland Garros > Wilander: “Since I arrived in Paris, I almost only hear this word in the mouths of my interlocutors: ‘entertainment’. And that annoys me a lot. No, tennis is not a entertainment”

Consultant for the newspaper L’Équipe throughout the fortnight of Roland‐Garros, Mats Wilander delivers his little personal column every day on a subject that is close to his heart. This Sunday, the Swede wanted to insist on the seriousness of tennis while some are trying somehow to make it absolutely entertaining.

“Since I arrived in Paris, I almost only hear this word in the mouths of my interlocutors: entertainment. And that really annoys me. No, tennis is not entertainment. Like music or the arts in general, it can be extremely entertaining. But it’s not the same thing. For me, entertainment is, for example, when, on a TV set, water is poured over the head of someone famous. It may be fun (or not) but it is in no way something deep, interesting, didactic or inspiring. This is not serious. But sport is serious. Tennis is serious. »
