Roland-Garros 2022 – Carlos Alcaraz qualified for the 2nd round after his victory over Juan Ignacio Londero

We will probably have to wait a bit to see the full panoply of Carlos Alcaraz at Roland-Garros. But the essential is there for the young prodigy. This Sunday, the Spaniard did the hardest part: avoiding the entry misstep despite immense pressure and the apprehension of a great first on the Philippe-Chatrier court. Without being radiant, the seeded number 6 finally got the better of Juan Ignacio Londero in three sets, gaining momentum during the match (6-4, 6-2, 6-0 in 1h50 of play) to rally the second turn.

This Sunday, we were almost expecting him. On the Central, the arrival of Alcaraz was made under the acclamations. Logical in view of the incredible expectations that surround the guy. In this context that was not easy to manage for a 19-year-old player, the Spaniard was able to rely on his natural strengths to stay the course: supersonic forehands and unfailing composure. While Londero gave him a hard time during the first set, Alcaraz was able to seize the right opportunity to turn in the lead, on his first break point (6-4). Something to relax and definitely start the machine.

6-0 in the last set

Of the flamboyant prodigy winner in Barcelona and Madrid, we have only seen snippets. Badly hit cushioning, sometimes woody shots and the feeling that the gigantism of the Central will have destabilized him a little, as he will have confirmed afterwards at the microphone of Alex Corretja. But, on certain sequences, Roland was able to discover why the tennis planet is in a swoon in front of the boy. After perhaps being relieved by the outcome of the first set, Alcaraz continued their work of destroying Londero with mind-boggling speed forehands, but also with crazy ground coverage.

But since he is called to great things, Alcaraz recalled that he was made of a different wood than the others. At each opening, the Spaniard was surgical, as evidenced by his 3/3 achieved on break points after the first two sets (6-4, 6-2). If Londero resisted for a while, the rest was much more complicated for the Argentinian. With a very effective service, Alcaraz unrolled without ever letting go of his prey, notably inflicting a 6-0 in the last set to his opponent.

Implacable, Alcaraz ended up getting his bearings on a court that he risks pushing back very quickly. For his second round, another earthman awaits him, his compatriot Albert Ramos-Vinolas. This one undoubtedly knows the extent of the task which awaits him: this Sunday, the machine Alcaraz was regulated to finally launch. Who can stop him?
