Ralf Rangnick confesses to having asked Luis Díaz for United

The signing of Luis Díaz with Liverpool has had an instant repercussion like few others in history. The Colombian arrived at the English team on January 30 from Porto in exchange for 45 million euros. At the time there was talk of Tottenham’s interest before Klopp took him away, but now another version has emerged.

Ralf Rangnick, interim coach of Manchester United, confirmed to Sky Sports that he asked the management to sign the Colombian to strengthen his team’s attack in January 2022. With the departure of Anthony Martial to Sevilla and the indefinite suspension of Mason Greenwood, Díaz was one of the alternatives that the German contemplated.

“The response of the leadership at that time was no, there was no player in the market that could really help usbut there were some: Luis Díaz, who is now in Liverpool; Julián Álvarez, who will be at Manchester City in the summer; Dusan Vlahović, who at that time was still with Fiorentina, those are just three that come to mind now,” Rangnick said.

“We had four days off at the time and they brought me up on the issues with Mason Greenwood and obviously Anthony Martial had already left. Then I realized that some forwards were missing and it might make sense. We were still in three competitions: Champions League, FA Cup and we were fourth in the Premier League, but that’s the past and it doesn’t help us anymore”.

Manchester United have struggled to convert goals since the start of 2022. In the last 10 games for the English first division, the Red Devils have scored 13 goals, of which nine have been by Cristiano Ronaldo. No other club player was able to score more than one goal. For his part, at the same time, Diaz has scored six goals and three assists since arriving at Liverpool.
