Owner of GelreDome is stunned: “Bizarre, I knew nothing about anything”

Michael van de Kuit, the owner of GelreDome, was surprised by the reports about the possible problems with the South Stand. During Vitesse’s home match against sc Heerenveen on Sunday, six rows will be kept free as a precautionary measure, which Van de Kuit did not see coming.

Nedstede, a Van de Kuit company, owns GelreDome. Yet he heard nothing about the investigation into the safety of the stadium and nothing about the conclusions, which said there may be problems with grandstand elements in South. “Bizarre”, he responds to De Gelderlander. “I didn’t know about anything.”

The fact that part of the South Stand must remain closed during Vitesse matches in the coming period is therefore a big surprise for the owner of the stadium. “Five minutes before the press release went out, I was informed via a letter from a lawyer, who was then unavailable all afternoon due to discussions.”

Several stadiums in the Netherlands have been checked extra after the branch in the Goffert Stadium broke down during the Gelderse derby in 2021. Then a number of Vitesse fans fell through the stands. The Nijmegen stadium then turned out to have all kinds of construction errors. GelreDome must now be checked extra.
