Official: Fergal Harkin is Standard’s new sporting director

As we told you a few days ago, Fergal Harkin is the new sporting director of Standard. The Liège club announced it on Tuesday in a press release. The 45-year-old Irishman leaves Manchester City after 13 years with the English club, focusing in particular on developing young players by giving them the opportunity to express themselves through loans to other clubs.

Fergal Harkin therefore joins Standard where his main mission will be to “develop the club’s football strategy, based both on the quality of our training center and on an effective recruitment process which together should improve the level of the team and the long-term development of the club”, explains the press release from Standard.

The new sporting director of the Rouches reacted to his appointment: “I am delighted to begin my next adventure and I look forward to taking up the challenge that Standard de Liège has offered me in order to achieve the objectives set by 777 Partners. I want to bring the club back to where it should be in Belgian football and give the fans pride and enthusiasm again!”he explains.

On the other hand, Standard have not yet specified the date of Harkin’s start, contenting themselves with saying that he will take over “as soon as he is released from his obligations with Manchester City”.
