Behind the municipal swimming pool, phase 3 of the Sports Center redevelopment begins with the addition of pickleball courts and the construction of a basketball court. This $853,000 project will be partly subsidized by the Financial Assistance Program for Recreational and Leisure Infrastructures (PAFIRS). The installation of the basketball court will be done with the collaboration of the Center de services scolaire des Hautes-Laurentides.

Mayor Daniel Bourdon recalls that water games were added to the Sports Center last summer. He also recalls that the swimming pool was renovated this year: “with these additions, our sports center should be practically complete”.

A new ice rink

The Lafleur skating rink will be completely rebuilt this year. The parking lot will be reworked, there will be landscaping, an addition of toilets and the site will be connected to the sewer and aqueduct network. This project, with a minimum cost of $200,000, will be partially financed by PAFIRS. The City recalls that this is the second time that a skating rink in Mont-Laurier has been refurbished, whereas last year it was the skating rink at École de la Carrière. The City intends to invest in the other skating rinks on municipal territory in the coming years.

A summary

With the road works, the City of Mont-Laurier is investing $11.6 million in public infrastructure this year. The City will borrow $2.3 million for the work. According to Daniel Bourdon, “We make sure to get the maximum amount of subsidies to maximize the work on the territory of the City”.

The Mayor explains that $1.4 million comes from the City’s investment tax, $300,000 comes from previous surplus, $75,000 from the City’s playground park fund, $541,000 from the quarry and sand pit, $5.6 million comes from various subsidy programs, as well as $762,000 from an agreement with a promoter for the development of a new residential street, which represents approximately 60% of the investment for this project, which is $1,197,000.

There was an investment of $7,000 in the engineering department to apply for a grant from the Quebec government for the City’s infrastructure. “With this $7,000, we got $1.7 million in grants,” explains the mayor.

Daniel Bourdon points out that over the past four years, $30 million has been used for public infrastructure work. “We are pleasantly surprised with the grants. Our contacts are making progress. We make sure to get the best prices from the contractors. »
