NBA: Kobe Bryant’s rookie jersey to be auctioned for record sum NBA News

A rookie jersey worn by the late basketball legend Kobe Bryant is set to be auctioned for a record-breaking sum.

The auction house SCP Auctions is hoping for around three to five million US dollars from the sale of the retro jersey, reports the Spanish sports newspaper Brand. That would be a record amount for a basketball jersey. The auction is scheduled to take place between May 18th and June 4th. “We believe this jersey could break the record for a basketball jersey,” said David Kohler of SCP Auctions.

Another rookie jersey has already made millions

According to Kohler, the seller, who wishes to remain anonymous, has kept the jersey for 25 years. The seller reportedly contacted the auction house after seeing another Bryant rookie jersey sold for $3.69 million last year. What’s special about the current item is that the former Lakers number eight wore the jersey in two playoff games.

That was on May 8-10 in the Western Conference Semifinals against Utah, when the Lakers won the first game and Bryant scored 19 points. Bryant’s Lakers lost the second game and he only scored nine points.

Authenticity has already been verified

Specialists have already confirmed the authenticity of the tirkot. Different features of the shirt were examined and a photo comparison made.

Memorabilia from the basketball pro, who died in 2020, are coveted and fetch large sums of money at auction. It just has to be the real stuff, Kohler explains.
