NBA: Daniel Theis and the Boston Celtics are in the final

After the Boston Celtics won the seven series against the Miami Heat, national player Daniel Theis is fighting for the title in the NBA. Daniel Theis is currently not allowed on the floor for the Boston Celtics, but the national player is the third German NBA professional in the finals.

With a proud smile, Daniel Theis held up the Bob Cousy Trophy for the champion of the Eastern Conference for the camera, and the winner’s shirt and matching cap were also a must. “What a team. Next stop: NBA Finals,” wrote the Boston Celtics basketball player on Instagram after the biggest success of his career – even if he was not allowed to contribute again.

As a bench presser, the national player followed how the record champions in the best basketball league in the world won the decisive seventh semifinal at the Miami Heat 100:96 and bought his ticket for the final series against the Golden State Warriors. Coach Ime Udoka had already dispensed with the “Big Man” in the previous two games, others were given preference, on Sunday only eight Celtics were allowed to play.

Disappointing, but none of that changes the fact that Theis is following in the footsteps of the greats. The 30-year-old from Salzgitter is only the third German NBA professional to have made it into the finals. Detlef Schrempf failed with the Seattle SuperSonics against the Chicago Bulls in 1996, ten years later Dirk Nowitzki lost to Miami with the Dallas Mavericks before he won the title in 2011 in the jersey of the Texans against the same opponent.

NBA: Daniel Theis returned to the Boston Celtics from the Houston Rockets in February

Theis returned to his first NBA club from the Houston Rockets in early February as part of a swap deal. National team colleague Dennis Schröder went the opposite way as part of the deal and now has to watch his buddy from Braunschweig play for the crown – or not.

Theis played all four games against Brooklyn in the play-off round of 16, then against Milwaukee six out of seven, now only four out of seven. He has to hope to get new chances against the Warriors around superstar Stephen Curry, who eliminated the Dallas Mavericks with Maxi Kleber in the semifinals.

In the do-or-die game, Boston once again relied on Jayson Tatum (26 points), Marcus Smart and Jaylen Brown (24 points each). The club are in the final for the first time in twelve years. The Celtics won the last of their 17 titles in 2008. (sid/brb)
