Manaea’s laudable efforts wasted

Despite an excellent outing by starting pitcher Sean Manaea, the San Diego Padres couldn’t maintain their lead and lost 6-5 to the Braves on Saturday in Atlanta.

In seven innings on the mound, the pitching ace made 12 opponents bite the dust. He was finally called out of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning, after walking leadoff hitter Adam Duvall. Manaea eventually allowed three runs on six hits and two walks.

Reliever Steven Wilson, however, was unable to hold on to a 5-3 lead. After recording the first two outs of the inning, he allowed a run single to Ozzie Albies, then a two-run homer to Marcell Ozuna. It is also Wilson (3-1) and not Manaea who saw the defeat added to his record.

The Padres also took advantage of Braves starter Charlie Morton’s departure from the mound before opening the machine offensively and scoring four points in the eighth assault. When it was time to hand over his position to the relief, after six innings, Morton had struck out nine, in addition to allowing only one run on two hits and one walk.

Like Manaea, Morton was not involved in the decision. It was rather Kanley Jansen (2-0) who earned the victory.

A six-man shutout

In Detroit, the Tigers brought in six pitchers and they paired up to shut out the Baltimore Orioles 3-0.

Michael Pineda, Wily Peralta, Jason Foley, Joe Jimenez, Andrew Chafin and Gregory Soto all had their turn on the mound, allowing a total of four hits and two walks to opposing batters, in addition to retiring six on strikes.

Peralta (1-0) is the one who earned the victory, he who is also the gunner of the winners who spent the most time on the mound, two sets and two thirds.

Offensively, Eric Haase and Willi Castro hit solo long balls for the winners. Castro produced a second point, thanks to a sacrifice fly.
