Lotto works, but it is Groenewegen who triumphs for the 4th time in Veenendaal | cycling

The Dutchman Dylan Groenewegen (Team BikeExchange) has once again won in front of his own audience. The 28-year-old sprinter won with surplus Veenendaal-Veenendaal. Gerben Thijssen ended up in second place. Lotto rider Arnaud De Lie was too far and was third in the heart of the Netherlands.

After two years of absence, the sprinters were able to pick up their hearts again in Veenendaal-Veenendaal. 5 riders were allowed to ride in the peak of the race for a long time, but in the final they were able to pack their bags.

On the way to the finish, Lotto-Soudal – with Vermeersch and Van Moer among others in the team – wanted to play hard between the fields. Not the right tactic, because in the final kilometer it was Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert who led the way ahead of Gerben Thijssen.

Dylan Groenewegen chose our compatriot’s wheel and reassembled it from afar. Thijssen came in second, Arnaud De Lie fought his way to third place.

Groenewegen is now 4 times on the honors list. In 2015, 2016 and 2018 he was also the fastest in Veenendaal.

Dylan Groenewegen: “Glad that Wanty came by”

“After a day of turning and turning, it was difficult to form a train. I was happy that Wanty suddenly passed by, that helped”, winner Dylan Groenewegen tells his story.

“Kaden (Groves, ed.) got me into the wheel and I started at 200 meters from the finish. That was enough.”

Gerben Thijssen: “Second behind Groenewegen is no shame”

After the final stage in Dunkirk, Gerben Thijssen had also won Veenendaal. “I’m second behind a great champion here, that’s no shame”, said the fast rider.

“The team put me in a perfect position. Maybe I waited a little too long, although there was little to start against Groenewegen.”

“Things have been going well in recent weeks,” concludes Thijssen. “I feel really good in the team. I got goosebumps how the teammates went through fire for me. I have to thank them for that.”

Arnaud De Lie: “I missed a teammate”

“I am happy with my podium place”, says number 3 Arnaud De Lie, who was aiming for his 4th victory of the season. “Perhaps we took the lead too early. In the sprint I missed a teammate.”

“We did have a nice race with the team. You always want more, but I don’t think being on the podium together with Groenewegen is not bad either.”
