KV Mechelen player Rick van Drongelen back home after fatal car accident in the Dutch province of Zeeland

Rick van Drongelen (23), a Dutch professional football player who has been defending the colors of KV Mechelen since this winter, was involved in a fatal accident on Wednesday morning on his way to training. Van Drongelen was injured and was taken away by ambulance. A day later, the Dutchman was allowed to go home again. The driver of the other vehicle was killed, the Dutch police said.

The accident took place at 7.40 am in Axel, a city in the Dutch province of Zeeland, where Van Drongelen also grew up. The cause of the accident is unknown. The fatal victim is an 18-year-old man from Hulst (in the Netherlands). “The man from Hulst died on the spot. The 23-year-old man ended up in a ditch with his car,” said Aid and Safety in Zeeland (HVZ). “He was injured and was taken to hospital by the ambulance service.”

“We want to express our condolences to the victim’s family,” said Tom Caluwé, sporting director of KV Mechelen, on the Mechelen website. “We learned that the accident happened this morning when Rick was on his way to practice. Rick himself was taken to the hospital. His injuries appear to be minor at first glance, but further medical examinations should provide clarity.”

KV Mechelen had no contact with the player on Wednesday. He was supposed to go home on Thursday. The 23-year-old Van Drongelen came over on a rental basis from the German Union Berlin at the end of January. The central defender has played ten games for yellow-red this season.
