Ice Hockey World Championship – Without Kühnhackl and Rieder – Sport

The two former NHL professionals Tom Kühnhackl and Tobias Rieder are not available to national coach Toni Söderholm for the Ice Hockey World Championships in Finland (May 13th to 29th). “They are definitely not there,” said Söderholm on Friday in Schwenningen after the first training session of the DEB selection. The Finn did not give any precise reasons for the failure of the professionals currently playing in Sweden. Kühnhackl, Stanley Cup winner with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 and 2017, and Rieder reached the semifinals with the DEB team at last year’s World Cup in Riga and ended up fourth. Söderholm’s squad is taking shape in Schwenningen. A total of ten new players, including the NHL trio with goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer (Seattle Kraken), Moritz Seider (Detroit Red Wings), Tim Stützle (Ottawa Senators) and captain Moritz Müller, joined the team before the final endurance test.
