Alonso became Renault’s world champion in 2005 and 2006, without hiding that he had a more durable car at the time than then-Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher. Alonso has not won the title since, although he is still considered one of the best pilots. According to the athlete, this season is proof that the racer is not the determining factor in success.
“This year shows that the pilot is a very important factor, but not a decisive one,” says Alonso. “Lewis is driving as well as he had done in the previous eight years. He dominated and broke all records. Now he is driving a very good lap, as he put it, but is a second behind.”
Alonso, who represents Alpine, is currently the oldest driver in the F1 championship, but is not yet ready to end his career. He believes that he is currently in his best shape, and also says that age is not decisive in motorsport.
“For the next year or two, I’d still like to continue racing because I feel like I’m in my best shape,” Alonso said. “It would be wrong for me to watch F1 from my home when I still feel that my abilities are 100%. As soon as I feel like it is no more, I will be the first to raise my hand and stop. Many things have to be sacrificed in life to start the race. But right now, in my case, it’s still worth doing. Age is not the determining factor in motorsport. Other sports are different. I’m as good right now as I was when I was 25 or 30. ”
