From May 26 to 28, Auch is hosting the Regional Handisport Future Games for the first time with the aim of encouraging new vocations among young participants.

Before receiving the national gratin of disabled sports during the French athletics championships next June at the Jacques-Fouroux stadium, the city of Auch is preparing to welcome young budding Occitan athletes as part of the Regional Games of the Coming. In this regard, from Thursday May 26 to Saturday May 28, more than twenty athletes, aged 8 to 18, from the region will meet. “A dozen come from the pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation center in Roquetaillade,” says Florian Delaunay, federal technical adviser to the Gers Departmental Handisport Committee (CDH 32).

The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games in the sights

An event that aims to introduce young people to new sports, such as athletics, swimming, fencing or even boccia (a ball sport related to petanque). “The objective is also to gradually bring young people to competition. For some, it will be their very first. We have a detection policy with a view to the 2024 Paralympic Games, ”shares Florian Delaunay.

Throughout the year, the CDH 32 has set up discovery days at the Roquetaillade center, located in Montégut, where clubs and affiliated associations have intervened so that they can present their practice. “We have also organized days directly within the clubs to make the committee known, to introduce young people to sports disciplines and convince them to join us”, confides the federal technical adviser of CDH 32.

“It is a first for the department to host the Regional Games of the Future for disabled people. We hope that this will give impetus to the development of sport for young people with disabilities,” concludes Florian Delaunay.

A dozen disciplines to discover over three days

If Thursday morning will be devoted to welcoming participants, during the afternoon, goalball (a ball sport practiced by athletes with visual impairments), table tennis and blowgun will be in the spotlight in Mouzon. The next day, young athletes can try their hand at athletics, boccia, tandem, fencing or football and wheelchair basketball all day long. Finally, swimming, diving and archery will be on the program for Saturday morning.
