“Often these are people who have bet and lost money – this seems to be a ‘reason’ for some of the abuse – but you should be aware that many of these messages are actually read,” emphasized the world number one.

It is extremely difficult to counteract. “It’s difficult to do anything about it, especially as an athlete, because you don’t have control over what people write,” Swiatek said.

She tries not to look at her cell phone too much, at least during tournaments. “So I don’t read that kind of bad news, but I know some others do,” the 20-year-old shared.

Swiatek: “They wouldn’t say that to our faces”
