Football: Discordant notes at Bayern’s championship celebration

Soccer

FC Bayern’s championship celebrations are over, but the question of the future of star striker Robert Lewandowski remains. Bayern board member Oliver Kahn assumes that the world footballer will stay with the German record champions. There was criticism for some stars – especially for Niklas Süle. The defender, who is moving to Dortmund, refused to play in the squad in the last game against Wolfsburg at his own request – and was dismissed by Honorary President Uli Hoeneß as he said goodbye.

“That doesn’t exactly speak for the player. If he talks about appreciation, then I would say he didn’t appreciate the club. I found this action catastrophic, ”said Hoeneß on the sidelines of the championship celebration. Sules, who is leaving the club on a free transfer, said he wasn’t appreciated enough at Bayern Munich. “You can all forget the fairy tale that he earns less in Dortmund than in Munich,” said Hoeneß.

Away from Süle, the 70-year-old voiced further critical tones. “With us, the trainer or sports director is always held accountable,” says Hoeneß. “The fact is that since Christmas we’ve had a few players with us who, by and large, haven’t played well anymore. That needs to be analyzed. And you have to put more pressure on the players you mean – and maybe you were too smart there.”

“Much Ado About Nothing” by Lewandowski

With another, Hoeneß said once again frankly, it is also all about the money: FC Barcelona is said to be putting out feelers to Lewandowski. The contract of the Pole in Munich currently runs for another year. 50 goals in 46 competitive games aroused desires. Lewandowski will be 34 in August – it’s about his last major career contract.

“There’s always a lot of ado, but it’s also a lot of ado about nothing,” said Bayern board member Oliver Kahn. “I don’t know anything about Barcelona. All I know is that we have the best striker in the world under contract, and it should stay that way.” Lewandowski has a contract until 2023, the former goalie emphasized, “and he will stay that long.” Hoeneß said about the cause, which will certainly last until a possible contract extension: “It’s all about coal – and nothing else.”
