Emma Raducanu – Mischa Zverev believes in Das Gelbe vom Ball: “She doesn’t have a real plan”

In September, Emma Raducanu was on the tennis Olympus. After winning the final in New York over Leylah Fernandez (6: 4, 6: 3), she was crowned US Open winner. The Briton was the first player in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam as a qualifier.
But after her triumph in the USA, things went downhill for the 19-year-old tennis shooting star. Since then, Raducanu has ended in the quarterfinals at the latest in every tournament. In April, she surprisingly separated from her coach Torben Beltz – after only five months of working together. It is not the first time that the Briton has changed her coach. Last year, Raducanu, who was born in Toronto, Canada, was coached by four coaches.

For Mischa Zverev in Eurosport Podcast Das Gelbe vom Ball a sign of a lack of security: “She played Wimbledon excellently and changed coaches immediately afterwards. She plays the US Open incredibly, wins all matches in two sets and changes coaches again. Means: I don’t think she understands exactly how herself or why she wins.”

Barbara Rittner also particularly regretted the “disappointing” separation from Beltz, Angelique Kerber’s former successful coach. “There was a certain light-heartedness paired with Torben’s easy-going nature – and yet they worked hard,” explained the 49-year-old.

“Great concern about the people”

The big hustle and bustle about her person is a problem for Raducanu. Immediately after their triumph in Arthur Ashe Stadium, the magnificent performances overturned: Met Gala in New York, Fashion Week in London, Bond premiere.

“All in all, of course, there is a great deal of unrest about Emma Raducanu,” said Rittner Eurosport Podcast Das Gelbe vom Ball. “There were always four or five people on the court. I don’t know if you’re doing her a favor. But of course there’s just a lot of interest. She’s incredibly popular in England,” explained the national coach of the German Tennis Association.

  • Das Gelbe vom Ball – the new episode with Mischa Zverev and Barbara Rittner:

“Everyone jumps on her internationally, she has great contracts and has to make an awful lot of mandatory appointments. And of course that puts a strain on such a young player,” said Rittner. What she needs is “a structure,” explained Zverev. “She’s still missing that a bit,” said the former number 25 in the world rankings, who also criticized the frequent change of coaches.

The inconsistency in the coach’s position is a “sign that either you or your team, your parents or the management don’t have a real plan at the moment – or you don’t know yourself – what you need exactly,” explained the Eurosport expert and added to: “I think the next few months – maybe years – will be complicated until she herself becomes more mature as a person.”

And Rittner also expects that Raducanu will “go through a very continuous, great development” in the coming years, with regard to the French Open (from May 22 live on free TV on Eurosport 1 and on Eurosport on Joyn) but clearly: “I don’t see them among the favorites in the next major tournaments.”
