Deaflympics: Brazil wins bronze medals in judo and swimming

Brazil won two more medals this Wednesday (4) at the 24th edition of the Summer Deaflympics, which will be played in Caxias do Sul. They came with the swimmer Guilherme Maia and the judoka Alexandre Fernandes.

The first goal was a bronze won by Alexandre Fernandes in the judo category up to 90 kg. The 33-year-old from Rio de Janeiro holds a special place in the history of the Summer Deaflympics, since he was the first Brazilian to win a medal in the history of the competition, in the 2009 edition of Taipei (Taiwan).

The other Brazilian medal came in swimming, and it was also bronze, with Guilherme Maia del Santos in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 52.73.

For the 33-year-old athlete, the goal had a particular flavor, as it was achieved with the presence of his mother Andrea in the stands: “My mother is my point of reference. She was my first swimming teacher and she is still my biggest support”.

Guilherme is the largest Brazilian medalist in the history of the Summer Olympic Games for the Deaf, with six hits (one gold, one silver and four bronzes).

volleyball wins

Brazil also won in volleyball matches. The men’s team beat France and the women’s team beat Mexico. In women’s basketball, the Brazilian team was defeated by Poland 10-125, while the men’s team lost 45-92 to Ukraine. Another setback for Brazil was in women’s handball, 18 to 35 for Turkey.

men’s soccer

In men’s soccer, Brazil beat the Netherlands 1-0, and the Brazilian team benefited from the decision of the International Committee for Sports for the Deaf (ICSD) to change the result of their first match against Cameroon.

Upon learning that the African country’s team was breaking the rules, the entity decided to change the match score, which had been a 3-2 victory for Cameroon (3-0 for Brazil), and take the points from Cameroon.

With that, Brazil now has six points and is placed third in Group B, behind Iran and Italy, who also have 6 points, but with a better goal difference.
