The UMS-Wright men’s golf team won the 26th AHSAA State Golf Championship and took the Class 5A crown The Mountain Brook boys won their 11th title, and fifth in a row, with a 6A title as the 73rd AHSAA Championship concluded Tuesday at Robert Trent Jones at the Huntsville Hampton Cove Golf Course.

The Class 4A boys in Haleyville shot back-to-back rounds of 297 to win their first state title, and all three girls’ teams won first place in the championship: Mars Hill Bible in 1A/3A, Pike Road in 4A/5A, and UMS – Wright at 6A.

Nine golfers from the men’s team finished the competition even, led by Class 7A medalist Jack Mitchell James Clemens with a consecutive 68th-place finish in the 36-hole championship to finish eighth in 136th place. 5-Festavia’s Under and Ward Harris Hills was third in the 2 under. Kiss game 67 on Tuesday was the low round of the day.

Mountain Brook’s Tom Fisher and St. Paul’s Buddy Fleming placed 1-under in 6A for a tie with low medal honors. Guntersville’s John Bruce led the 5A class with a three-under 141 shot and shot Haleyville’s Hudson Lawson to finish atop the 4A leaderboard.

Bayside Academy’s Cole Kumiyati led Class 3A by finishing 1-under and 1A/2A Bayshore Christian Michael Heaton completed the competition at 1-under.

Five girls finished under par with three girls in the 4-under 140: Molly Davidson of Hewitt Trussville at 7A, Frances Brown and Ginger Heath of Hartselle at 6A. Auburn’s Kate Ha finished second in 7A with 143, 1 under par. Brindley Mountain’s Eli Cowtrane led the 1A/3A at 3 under par. Alexandria’s Lauren Seacrest won 4a/5a with a finish five times.

On Tuesday, 34 of the 40 teams improved their scores in Monday’s inaugural 18-hole competition. Lauderdale County quarterback Peyton Preston scored a hole-in-one on the 14th hole and finished seventh in Class 3A.

The other men’s champions were 7A Vestavia Hills with 14 out of 590, Bayside Academy in 3A (67 out of 643) and Elba in 1A/2A (89 out of 665). Spain Park won the women’s 7A title over Huntsville. Both teams finished 20-452, with the championship determined by the first tiebreaker: fourth-place low scorer. Courtney Johnson finished 79-76-155 for Jaguar, which also tied her for ninth in 7A.

Hartselle’s Ginger Heath raced into the lower round of the championship on the girls’ side, shooting a 6-under 66 on Tuesday to finish one stroke behind UMS-Wright’s 6A girls’ under medalist Frances Brown. Brown set rounds 71-69-140 to lead the Bulldogs state champion race. Heath shot a 75 on Monday and finished with a 36-hole total of 141.
