Carlos Alcaraz, the new tennis amulet

Alcaraz was born in 2003 and, in the civil registry, his name is Carlos Alcaraz Garfia. He grew up and fell in love with tennis in El Palmar, a town in the Murcia region of Spain. He turned 19 on May 5, a day he celebrated by reaching the quarterfinals of the Madrid Opena Masters 1000 that he eventually won (the second title of this kind he won in his career)… But we’ll talk about that in a few more paragraphs.

What is the magic of Alcaraz?

To put yourself in the middle of conversations in your field, whatever you do, you need argumentsand Carlos Alcaraz never tires of demonstrating them.

Furthermore, the young adult seems to be just what the ATP needed.

It directly threatens to change that almost systematic rhythm that men’s tennis has adopted in the last 15 years, with three (four, by far) names dominating the top 3 for hundreds and hundreds of weeks, with Nadal, Djokovic y Federer -still injured and away from the courts- dominating at will and yes, some young names bursting onto the scene, but not changing reality when it comes to Grand Slams and the most important tournaments.

Drop shots with a delicacy worthy of an experienced professional. Aggressiveness to find the line even with difficult angles. Resilience in the face of adverse scenarios, even against top-tier rivals. Alcaraz brings together technical characteristics that, added to the successes he has already achieved and his focused statements, give one to believe in him, believe in his potential.

He has been a professional since 2018. In his short career he has won five titles: Umag Open 2021 (Ukraine); Rio Open 2022, Miami Open 2022; Conde de Godó Tournament, in Barcelona 2022; and the Madrid Open 2022 the most attractive tournament of his career.

This victory is, without a doubt, the world catapult for Alcaraz, who became the first player under the age of 20 to defeat Nadal on clay. Rafa had a 20-0 record against opponents of that age on his preferred surface.

To win the championship, Juan Carlos Ferrero’s pupil beat the Gregorian Nikoloz Basilashvili and Cameron Norrie in his first matches. Then he beat in the quarterfinals who is considered his best reference, an almost natural mentor, Rafael Nadal

In the semifinals he had to overcome the number one in the world , Nole, and finally won in the final Alexander Zverev .

Alcaraz is the first tennis player to consecutively defeat, on clay, Nadal and Djokovic, who did not hesitate to point him out as “the best tennis player of this year”, after his elimination.

Before that, the Iberian had already become the youngest champion of an ATP 500 tournament, winning in Rio de Janeiro 2021. And of course, since this year he has been the youngest tennis player to win the Miami Open. Achievement after achievement.
