Borussia Dortmund continues to work on its squad for the coming season. The Bundesliga club has now officially announced Nico Schlotterbeck’s commitment. The international signs long-term.
Borussia Dortmund announced late Monday afternoon what had been suspected for a few weeks: Nico Schlotterbeck is moving from SC Freiburg to BVB and, together with Niklas Süle, will form the new central defense for second-placed Bundesliga players.
“Nico’s path reminds me of my own, because I came to BVB from Freiburg as a young national player at his age,” said Sebastian Kehl, head of the licensed player department, in a statement from the club.
Sports director Michael Zorc also welcomed the signing of the 22-year-old international: “Nico Schlotterbeck is a young German international who has made great progress. His profile fits BVB perfectly.”

According to information from “Bild”, Schlotterbeck had completed the obligatory medical check-up in the Dortmund Knappschaftskrankenhaus in Brackel in the afternoon.
As the Bundesliga club announced on Monday, the 22-year-old central defender finally signed a contract until June 30, 2027, which should bring him 4.5 million euros per season. The fee is apparently around 20 million euros plus possible bonus payments.
After Süle, who comes from FC Bayern, Schlotterbeck is the second signing for the coming season. Both national players should help to stabilize the shaky defense of Borussia, which has already conceded 50 goals in 32 Bundesliga games.
“In consultation with all parties involved, I have decided to announce my move to Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2022 today. I want to create clarity for SC Freiburg, Borussia Dortmund and myself personally,” said Schlotterbeck.
The 1.91 meter tall defender has played 53 competitive games for Freiburg so far. As a loan player, he made 18 appearances for 1. FC Union Berlin in the 2020/21 season. He made his national team debut last March.
