Baskets Oldenburg separate from “Retter” Freyer

Coach Ingo Freyer has to leave the former German basketball champion and cup winner EWE Baskets Oldenburg despite a successful rescue mission. After staying up, the Bundesliga club will start the next season with a new head coach, and the announcement of the personal details should take place “after the final details have been clarified”.

According to information from the trade magazine “BIG – Basketball in Germany”, Pedro Calles from league rival Hamburg Towers is about to move to Oldenburg. The Spaniard recently announced that he would not extend his contract in Hamburg beyond the summer.

The former German national player Freyer (51) became the coach of the then last-placed EWE Baskets, which were in acute danger of relegation at the end of January. Lower Saxony finally saved themselves as eleventh in the table.

Freyer was one of two remaining candidates for the coaching position “until the last round of the selection process,” the club said. “It wasn’t easy for us to have to tell Ingo on the finish line that we had decided on someone else,” said Managing Director Hermann Schüller: “In the end it was nuances that made the difference.”
