The men’s and women’s badminton national teams in Korea confirmed early on to advance to the quarterfinals of the World Team Badminton Championships.

The women’s national team defeated Canada 4-1 in the second round of Group D of the 2022 World Women’s Team Badminton Championships held in Bangkok, Thailand on the 10th (Korean time).

The women’s national team, which won the first leg 5-0 against the United States, also won the second leg 4-1, securing second place in the group, which was granted a place in the quarterfinals regardless of the remaining third game.

The women’s national team will face off against India for the first place in the group in the third qualifying match to be held at 11 a.m. on the 11th.

Their opponent, India, also defeated Canada 4-1 in the first leg of the preliminary round and then defeated the United States 4-1 in the second leg, confirming their progress to the quarterfinals.

Earlier, the men’s national team also defeated Thailand 3-2 in the first round of Group A of the World Men’s Team Badminton Championships, and in the second game, also defeated Singapore 3-2 to secure second place in Group A.

The men’s national team will play the third qualifying match against Indonesia for the first place in the group at 4 pm on the 11th.

Indonesia also secured a place in the quarterfinals by winning the first and second rounds of the preliminary round.

In this tournament, the final ranking is meaningless as long as the group has secured 2nd place because the quarterfinals are randomly determined through lottery.

The World Women’s Team Badminton Championships and the World Men’s Team Badminton Championships are team events held every two years, called the Uber Cup and Thomas Cup, respectively.

In the 2020 tournament held in October last year in the aftermath of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), the women’s national team placed third in the Uber Cup, and the men’s team only reached the quarterfinals.
