Former world number three Dominic Thiem conceded his sixth first round defeat in a row after his comeback.

With Dominic Thiem (ATP 194), a prominent name has already said goodbye to the ATP 250 tournament in Geneva. The 2020 US Open winner lost in the first round to the Italian Marco Cecchinato (ATP 134) in just over an hour and a half 3: 6, 4: 6. The Austrian earned seven breakballs, but was unable to use any of them. Cecchinato, who had successfully played through the qualification, was enough a service breakthrough to advance to the next round.

Thiem made his comeback in March after a long injury break, but has been waiting for his first win ever since. Most recently, the former world number 3 was eliminated in Madrid and Rome in the first round. The 28-year-old has been without a win for 10 games in all seasons. When he last won over a year ago, Thiem was still in fourth place, but he has now fallen 190 places.

Just one more law

Cecchinato meets Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak (ATP 81) in the round of 16. The Italian hopes to find momentum for a high with the prestige win against Thiem. The season has been sobering for Cecchinato (as for Thiem) so far. He lost eleven singles in a row before finally winning a game again in qualifying in Geneva.

Argentina’s Federico Delbonis, the number 7 seed, was the only seed on Monday to survive his opening game (6-4, 6-4 against Ricardas Berankis). In addition, Richard Gasquet (ATP 75) won against the Australian John Millman (ATP 93) 6:3, 6:1. Gasquet meets the top seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev (ATP 2) in the round of 16.
