On May 4, 2021, a tweet from the official AS Roma account surprised the whole football world. José Mourinho, fired two weeks earlier from Tottenham, was chosen to succeed his compatriot Paulo Fonseca on the Roman bench the following season. At the time of this announcement, the Giallorossi were only pointing to a disappointing 7th place in Calcio which they would keep until the end of the season. Result: no qualification for either the Champions League or the Europa League. Fortunately for the Romans, a new competition had just been born: the Conference League.
