130 children at the standing tournament for judo beginners

The number of participants of more than 100 boys and girls from Wermelskirchen, Leverkusen and Burscheid exceeded all expectations of the organizers.

The Wermelskirchen judo club made 130 children happy. Organizer Janine Kopperberg and her team had invited to the standing tournament for beginners – and it was already clear in advance that many children would accept this invitation.

Despite the division into three different age groups, Thomas-Mann-Strasse was a bit crowded at times, but everyone involved enjoyed the special competitive atmosphere. A number of judoka were at a tournament for the first time and were visibly nervous, reports Katrin Seide from the JCW. For those responsible, however, the focus was on conveying fun in the fights, rewarding courage and motivating for the future. All the children received a lot of praise from the honorary judges. And of course there were the handcrafted edible medals in different colors regardless of the podium place. In order to promote not only fighting but also togetherness, a special mode was used for fighting.

As in real (judo) life, the first full point decided the victory. The fight was then continued for the remaining time, so that the weaker could gain more experience and a sense of achievement and the strong could practice modesty. Kano’s principle of “mutual help for mutual well-being” became visible in many pools.

Almost 50 children from our own “JCW stable” took part in the tournament. Many of them only started with the sport of judo after the taster course at the end of last year. The siblings Daniele and Alessandra Diteranto as well as Laura and Jonas Bublies were able to win all their fights. Svenja Schulz, Jakob Friske, Sune Jacobs, Jamie Orendi, Jonathan Eickhoff, Jannis Frieg and Lotta Hellwig were also first.

Vincent Clemm, Lasse Möller, Jemima Ziegler, Maxim Nehlsen, Olivia Clemm, Ron Trienenjost, Greta Spratte, Matti Gulich, Nele Matthies, Henry Drosten, Nour and Sedra Heidokiki only had to admit defeat once.

Third place went to Nelly Jäger, Tim Krannich, Omar Omar, Marie Spratte, Lenart Preyer, Mathis Blömker, Sophia Schmalfeldt, Laila Clemm, Marc Miller, Till Prinz, Phil Wolfschläger, Miriam Krings, Hannah Rücker, Dominik Dambeck, Jonas Neumann, Nico Arndt, Katharina Jalunin, Vivien Preyer, Emilia Taganovic, Aaron Hartmann, Maximilian March, Justus Drosten and Leon Scurrano.
