He never stopped repeating his love for his club and his city. His only wish is to stay an additional season. He therefore fought on the field, proving that his talent was identical despite his almost 35 years (May 6), while declaring that he was ready to reduce his salary. Dries Mertens’ efforts paid off.
So far, president Aurelio De Laurentiis was not in favor of lifting the option on his contract for one more year. But the situation has changed. The two men met on Tuesday to discuss for almost 1h30 and reach an agreement which only has to be signed.
According to Corriere dello Sportthe Red Devil’s salary will be divided by three to allow the club to integrate it into its salary reduction objectives. “I told Dries he has an option for another year and we have to sit down and decide, maybe at the end of the championship”told Aurelio De Laurentiis to Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.
“He wants to stay in this towncontinues the boss of the club. Ciro is in love with the Naples lifestyle. He is also a player who has left his mark on the club with his goalscoring record. There should be no problem for an extension, although in life you should never say never.”
In the coming days, Dries Mertens will therefore only have to put his signature at the bottom of the new contract proposed by its president. Probably only for one more season, maybe with a new option of another more year. His salary should either be around 4.5 million euros per year, but go down to 1.5 million. Which will clearly not prevent him from living happily with his partner and his son Ciro in the city he cherishes so much.
