After the tasks at the 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami, the next highlight of the season is just around the corner for Jannik Sinner. The third Masters of the year takes place in Monte Carlo, where the Sextner meets an interesting opponent in the first round.

As can be seen from training videos with Novak Djokovic over the past few days, the blisters that forced Sinner to give up in Miami have long since healed. So nothing stands in the way of the Sesto player’s clay court debut in the current season. The unvaccinated Djokovic, on the other hand, returns to the tennis tour after a long break after missing the tournaments in the United States due to the entry regulations in force there.

As the draw on Friday revealed, fans can look forward to an attractive tournament despite the injury-related absences of Rafael Nadal, Daniil Medvedev, Matteo Berrettini and Dominic Thiem.

An old acquaintance

Sinner was unlucky, as he met the Croatian Borna Coric (ATP 199) at the start. The 25-year-old enjoyed great success at a young age, was already world No. 12 in 2018 and has won two titles in his career. Due to injury, however, he missed almost the entire season last year. Coric made his comeback in Indian Wells a few weeks ago – after a break of more than a year. He’s only won one of the three matches he’s contested since then, but he showed improving form in Miami. Because he took a sentence from Alexander Zverev, after all number 3 in the world.

Explosive: Coric was trained by former Sinner coach Riccardo Piatti until September 2019. The cooperation ended at that time because Piatti took Maria Sharapova under his wing and the Croatian no longer received the desired attention from the coaching guru. Coric often trained at Piatti’s academy in Bordighera – and thus side by side with Jannik Sinner. The latter is the absolute favorite in the duel, especially since the Croatian is not considered a clay court specialist and his last match on this surface was almost two years ago. The winner of the duel meets either the Chillenen Christian Garin (ATP 29) or a qualifier. It is not yet clear when the match will take place.
