The Principality Sports Games return to Gijón

More than 30 sports modalities, among which football and basketball stand out with 1,600 participants

One more year, between the months of November and June, the Sports Games of the Principality of Asturias are held, placing Gijón as the head of the area with the highest participation of schoolchildren. More of 7,000 girls and boys are registered in the area of ​​Gijón, Villaviciosa and Carreño coordinated by the Municipal Sports Board of Gijón.

Schoolchildren, in these competitions, can choose in their regional phase between more than 30 sports modalities, among which sports such as soccer, basketball (with more than 1,600 participants), handball (with almost 900 athletes), athletics/cross country and volleyball with more than 700 registered each, judo and speed skating stand out for their large participation. The consolidation of sports schools in more than 50 schools and institutes in Gijón and the collaboration with different entities and sports clubs of the councils make the sports competitions of the Games a success in the multiple competitions and meetings that take place every week, thereby promoting Asturian grassroots sport.

Parallel to the program of the Sport games, from the General Directorate with competence in matters of Sport, the Program of Games of the Principality of Adapted Sports promoting the practice of adapted and outdoor sports activities within the framework of an educational and inclusive sports policy aimed at the social insertion of this group. The calendar of these proposals started last November with a futsal match at the Gijón Sports Palace. Until the end of May, sports skills activities, table tennis, table football, athletics, swimming, basketball and free throws will be held, closing the calendar at the end of May with a cross-country race at the sports facilities of La Moral, in Llanera.

The program of Sports Games has as fundamental objectives the creation of sports habits, the improvement of health, education in values ​​and the promotion of sportsmanship, as well as orientation towards the improvement of coexistence, respect for the rules, the prevention of violence in sports matters and the promotion of gender equality.
