Tennis: Thiem also does without Monte Carlo

Tennis

Dominic Thiem will not be at the start of the ATP Masters tournament in Monte Carlo next week. The Lower Austrian announced on social networks on Thursday that he had tested negative for the corona virus after his illness, but he now wants to undergo a medical check-up. His waiver comes as no surprise, since Thiem first has to get fit for matches again.

“A quick update: I’m finally negative and feel a lot better,” said Thiem, who is now returning to Austria, and thanked his fans for their recovery wishes. “I will now have a medical check-up so that I can get back into the action.”

Most recently, the Lower Austrian returned to the tennis court in Marbella after nine months of injury. But the trip to Monaco comes unsurprisingly too early for the former US Open winner immediately after his coronavirus disease.

Thiem made a comeback in Marbella

Thiem made his comeback at the Challenger in Marbella on March 29, 280 days after his wrist injury in Mallorca. He lost the first match against Pedro Cachin from Argentina 3: 6 4: 6 and in the analysis afterwards he also lacked the automatism and the naturalness, but Thiem was pain-free. That was the most important thing at that point.

If things go normally, his planned return to the ATP tour should now be in the week after Monte Carlo, Thiem has named for the ATP 250 tournament in Belgrade, which starts on April 18 (Easter Monday). Matteo Berrettini is also absent from Monte Carlo. The world number six from Italy underwent an operation on his right hand at the end of March and has therefore already had to forego participation in the tournament in Miami. Berrettini will be out at least until mid-May. This means that it will also be tight for the French Open in Paris, which begins on May 22nd.
