Villarreal has added another chapter to his Champions League fairytale this season. In their own stadium, the Spanish club took the lead after eight minutes thanks to Danjuma and then kept the great Bayern in check for the entire game. Bayern will have another chance next Tuesday.
Key moment: Just before half time the egg became 2-0. A cross from Coquelin landed in goal. Although his world goal was rightly disallowed for offside, Villarreal’s confidence was given a huge boost.
Man of the match: Arnaut Danjuma, ex-Club Brugge, scored the only goal of the match after just 8 minutes. Danjuma easily tapped in Parejo’s cross. For the Dutchman, this was his sixth Champions League goal of the season.
Remarkable: Bayern have lost an away Champions League game for the first time since September 27, 2017.
Villarreal surprised
Although Bayern claimed possession at the start of the game, it was the home side who took the lead after just 8 minutes. Davies was easily outplayed by a one-two between Moreno and Lo Celso. The latter crossed to Parejo, who in turn kicked Danjuma. The Dutch international then tapped the ball in from close range.
After Villarreal’s early goal, the visitors seemed a bit upset. Halfway through the first half, Bayern were the better team again, but their attempts failed to materialize. The Germans played a harmless first half.
Just before half-time, Bayern got away well. Coquelin’s pass landed in goal. But the world goal was rightly disallowed for offside. It was so after 2-0.
In the second half, the best chances are again for the home side. Moreno kicked the post, Danjuma lingered too long in the box and Pedraza went just wide. Bayern played a better second half, but the attempts on goal were again scarce. Star player Lewandowski played an anonymous match.
Nagelsmann and his men will have to work hard at home next week. But all the cards are still on the table.
