Sartorius Juniors of BG Göttingen end NBBL relegation round in first place

The Sartorius Juniors finished the season in the youth basketball Bundesliga (NBBL/U19) as the top of the table in the north relegation round. The team of Juniors head coach Venelin Berov secured the top spot with a 70:57 (32:26) win against the TenneT young heroes from Bayreuth.

In a game dominated by defense, the youngsters from Göttingen kept the upper hand and went into the summer break with a sense of achievement. “I congratulate the whole team and I’m proud of the boys and the development that each individual has made,” said Berov after the game.

In a hard-fought first quarter, both teams scored few points because the defense on both sides was very good and played aggressively. “We knew that Bayreuth would fight and give everything,” said the coach, whose team was 9:10 behind after ten minutes.

In the second half, the Juniors reversed the result and gained a six-point lead at half-time (32:26). “We played very well for each other,” says Berov. “It’s the first time we’ve given 21 assists in a game.”

In the second half, the south of Lower Saxony kept control of the game and defensively repeatedly took the key players out of the game for Bayreuth, who were fighting against relegation. The Juniors won the third quarter with 16:14 and extended their lead to 48:40.

In the last section, too, the Göttinger made few mistakes offensively and scored well – every player scored points. The Berov squad didn’t allow much on the defensive, so they also won the last quarter (22:17). For Bayreuth, the defeat means relegation from the NBBL, while the youngsters can be very satisfied with the 2021/22 season. “We have laid a great foundation for next season,” said Berov.
