Played to lose but found another win | Weak match for Newell’s with victory against Platense by 3 to 1

With the VAR having a direct influence on the result, Newell’s found a victory last night for which he did not merit. Platense dared to play in attack and generated risk, although in general he failed in the definition. La Leprosy prevailed despite doing very little in the rival area. A header from Garro and a penalty that only the VAR could find guided the team to victory, although there was no end with anguish thanks to a Reasco run that ensured the win.

Newell’s is a team that needs little of their game to make a difference. He attacked little in the classic but won without any major problems. Yesterday with Platense he generated little and took advantage in the first ball that was the rival goal. Because Platense not only was more mobile in attack but also dominated the game in large passages of the match, mainly due to the appearances of his midfielders.

The visit did not mark the first because he failed in his shots and Ditta cleared a ball that was destined for a goal by throwing himself with his whole body with his feet forward. That’s why Garro’s goal was a surprise and had a lot of injustice. The striker won a corner kick from above and headed cleanly to the far post, with nothing left for Ledesma to do.

That is not why the visit entered into contradictions. Tijanovich lost it with a high right hand, but on the next play Schor equalized with a half turn with a ball where Platense took all the rebounds in the small area, including Macagno’s first save.

In the construction of the game it was evident that the team suffered the absences of Pablo Pérez and Julián Fernández. In the middle, Leprosy never prevailed or took advantage. Platense had resolved the roads to the red and black area. With Castro inconsequential, Méndez’s bullfights were the main attack resource.

The match was ruined by VAR. Many minutes were used to review each of the goals, removing any attraction for the game. But Dóvalo gave Newell’s an unusual penalty. Garro and Infante took a corner kick but Dóvalo considered the defender’s action illegal and Castro scored the second penalty with a right cross.

Platense never changed his game. And he approached Macagno. But Tijanovich shot it over the top in front of the goal, in a bad rejection of the leper goalkeeper, and Bogado lost it with a cross volley. Nothing made Newell’s react. Their midfielders never had the ball and the team spent the game standing in their field. But he did not suffer because Platense did not defend a ball that Macagno took, Reasco escaped alone and scored the third, the first of the Ecuadorian with the red and black, with a cross shot. The victory left Newell’s in the qualifying zone for the quarterfinals.
