New Badminton Trophy unveiled – Horses

The winner of Badminton Horse Trials in 2022 will be the first to lift a new trophy designed for this year’s event. Sculptor Judy Boyt created the new trophy, using materials from the Duke of Beaufort’s Badminton estate.

Judy was commissioned in September 2019 and was already busy with the design when the pandemic hit. The silver used for the trophy includes pieces from Badminton House. The pedestal is made with wood from an old oak tree in Badminton Park. The names of all previous winners, from John Sheddon in 1949 to Piggy March in 2019, are filed in a secret drawer in the pedestal.

Link to past

“We really wanted to keep a link with the previous trophy, so you’ll see it’s three horses again, performing the three eventing disciplines, but with up-to-date tack and equipment. For example, the dressage and jumping horses wear ear nets and I have recreated the modern stirrups and boots. In addition, I thought it was important that the names of the past winners were also included on the trophy so that they would not be forgotten,” said Judy Boyt.

Badminton Horsetrails takes place May 4-8.
