NBA-Basketball: Protest in Memphis, Playoff-Frust in Dallas – Sport

Another protest action forced the game to be suspended in the NBA game between the Memphis Grizzlies and the Minnesota Timberwolves. In the second quarter, a 19-year-old woman chained herself to one of the basket structures at the FedEx Forum in Memphis. Security forces broke the chain and took the woman out of the hall, after which she was arrested. The woman is said to belong to the animal welfare organization Direct Action Everywhere, the organization tweeted on Saturday.

The protest was directed against Glen Taylor, who will own the Minnesota team until the end of the current season. The 80-year-old owns a chicken farm in Iowa, where 5.3 million animals are said to have recently been killed because of bird flu. The woman’s t-shirt read “Glen Taylor Roasts Animals Alive.”

Just a few days ago, a protest interrupted a Timberwolves game. In the important play-in game against the Los Angeles Clippers last Tuesday, a woman glued her hand to the basketball court. According to ESPN, she too is said to belong to the same animal welfare organization.

Meanwhile, the Dallas Mavericks had a false start to the playoffs without injured leader Luka Doncic. In game one of the “best of seven” series against the Utah Jazz, the Texans around the German Maxi Kleber lost 93:99 in their own hall. The prospects of surviving the first round of the play-offs for the first time since winning the title in 2010/11 are not improving. In a gripping encounter, national player Kleber scored ten points.

Despite a strong fighting performance, the “Mavs” could not replace exceptional player Doncic. The 23-year-old Slovenian suffered a calf injury shortly before the end of the regular season, and his comeback in game two of the series on Monday, also in Dallas, is in doubt. The Mavericks’ top scorer was Jalen Brunson with 24 points. Utah’s dominating player was Donovan Mitchell, who scored 30 of his 32 points in the second half.

The Golden State Warriors, the Philadelphia 76ers and the Minnesota Timberwolves also took the lead. The Warriors defeated the Denver Nuggets 123-107 in Stephen Curry’s comeback. Curry came off the bench after his foot injury and scored 16 points. Philadelphia won against the Toronto Raptors 131-111, Minnesota against the Memphis Grizzlies 130-117.
