If Tom Thibodeau had been named coach of the year last year as part of the league trophies, it was Monty Williams who had been elected best coach of the season by the coaches’ union.
And the Suns technician is doing it again, since the NBCA has decided to honor him again this season!
Unlike the trophy awarded by the NBA, which is the result of the vote of journalists, this trophy, named Michael H. Goldberg in reference to the former executive director of the union, is the result of the votes of the 30 coaches in office.
This new trophy rewards the exceptional season of Phoenix, already a finalist last year but which has made further progress, setting a franchise record with 64 wins for 18 losses.
Moreover, the progress of the Suns since the arrival of Monty Williams at the helm is stunning. Before his arrival, the club remains thus on four seasons with less than 30% of victories. For his first campaign, he is thus almost in balance (34-39) by finishing strong in the “bubble”. For his second season, he exceeded 70% success (51-21) and for his third, he was almost at 80% (64-18) with the best record in the league and a franchise record.
Note that Willie Green (New Orleans), Taylor Jenkins (Memphis), Tyronn Lue (LA Clippers), Gregg Popovich (San Antonio) and Erik Spoelstra (Miami) also received votes.
