The editorial staff of Golf Planète gives you here its “top 5” favorites for the Masters. And you, who do you see wearing the green jacket?

Smith, the fit man

Winner of Players Championship, the Australian has been in great shape since the beginning of the year. His putting is the all-risk insurance of his game. As Lionel notes, he showed a tiny bit of feverishness on the TPC Sawgrass at the time of final packaging, but he was able to regain his composure at the right time. Second in Augusta last year, only player in the history of the tournament to have played all 4 rounds under 70, Cameron Smith (pictured) is our #1 favorite.

Koepka, the force majeure

He is the only man mentioned in the “top 5” favorites by our three journalists, with Cameron Smith. Second at the Masters in 2019 and seventh in 2020, recent quarter-finalist at the WGC match play, Brooks Koepka wants to perpetuate his reputation as a major player (where he has four titles). He never won at Augusta. An “anomaly” that he could well repair this year because his physique finally seems to be on top.

Rahm, the logic of numbers

In the last four editions, the world No. 2 has finished 4th, 9th, 7th and 5th. Jon Rahm must tell himself that it’s going to end up falling on the right side to Augusta. If Lionel, one of our three journalists, did not mention him in his “top 5”, it is undoubtedly because the Basque is having a difficult start to the 2022 season, with putting at half mast. Augusta may not be the best place to find your way back to the hole on the greens, but with such a stats sheet, it’s impossible to ignore the chances of “Rahmbo”.

DJ, the quiet force

Winner in 2020, second in 2019 but a missed cut in 2021, Dustin Johnson is bound to be a dangerous man in Augusta. His recent fourth-place finish in the WGC match play shows rising form. We would not be surprised to see him fighting for victory against the young wolves, because his power should still be an asset of choice to challenge a Augusta National Golf Club extended (on holes n°11 and n°15).

Thomas, closer and closer

Often placed at Mastersbut never really in the game for the win, Justin Thomas may well finally find the keys to fetch the green jacket. Relatively discreet in 2022, it seems to be biding its time. Something tells us that it could well be for this year… A “feeling”, like that…

And also…

And Scottie Scheffler, will you tell us? Only one of our three editors, Guillaume, placed it in his top 5 and only in 3rd position. No doubt the new world No. 1 has won too much recently to be imagined again in the firmament.

Definitely on the lookout for a big surprise, Lionel has designated… Xander Schauffele as his No. 1 favourite. A big bet that he justifies by the two “top 3” of the little American in the last three editions of the Masters. Lionel, always him, includes Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy in his “top 5”. One has his love of the course for him, the other is chasing the only major he has not won…

François also cited Rory among his favorites, but in 6th position. Were also mentioned Abraham Ancer, Daniel Berger, Viktor Hovland and Tyrrell Hatton among the underdogs.

No citation for world No. 3 and No. 5 Collin Morikawa and Patrick Cantlay… Nor, it will not have escaped you, for a certain Tiger Woods.

Perhaps you have another opinion, do not hesitate to share it with us!
