Master hangover at Bayern: Listless FCB clearly loses 1: 3 against Mainz

FC Bayern suffered an away bankruptcy on matchday 32 in the Bundesliga. Julian Nagelsmann and his team lost 3-1 at 1. FSV Mainz 05.

After beating Borussia Dortmund 3-1 and winning the German championship early a week ago, Bayern’s winning streak in the Bundesliga has come to an end. After five wins in a row, FCB lost 3-1 at 1. FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday afternoon.

In view of the performance of Bayern and especially the goal shot statistics, the defeat is perfectly fine. Bayern managed just four shots, just one of them on goal for the 05ers. Mainz, on the other hand, had 27 (!) deals, seven of them on the box.

Nagelsmann surprises with his starting eleven

Julian Nagelsmann had already emphasized at yesterday’s matchday PK that he would like to give some reservists and young players more playing time in the remaining three league games and the 34-year-old followed his words with action. Compared to the top game against BVB a week ago, he made changes to his starting eleven: Ulreich, Süle, Sabitzer and Choupo-Moting replace Neuer, Upamecano, Müller and Coman.

Mainz shocked Bayern early, Lewandowski shortened

Bayern didn’t get off to a good start and almost fell behind after two minutes when Burkardt’s shot from a tight angle hit the underside of the bar. Munich were also lucky in the 11th minute when Hack hit the crossbar again with a head from a corner. Six minutes later, Bayern Munich appeared dangerous again in the penalty area, but failed at Ulreich from close range. Almost 60 seconds later, however, the time had come: After an unsuccessful tee shot by Ulreich, the ball landed at Burkardt, who gave the hosts a 1-0 lead with a low shot from 15 meters.

Afterwards, Mainz remained the game-determining team and had significantly more game shares. In the 27th, Niakhate increased to 2-0. After a cross from Aaron, Stach extended the ball with a header and the 05 captain had no trouble putting the ball into the empty goal.

The second goal we conceded was a kind of wake-up call for Bayern. In the 30th, Choupo-Moting headed the outside of the post after a cross. In the 33rd minute, the Cameroonian was the focus again, but this time as a assist for Robert Lewandowski, who reduced the deficit to 1: 2 with a precise shot from just under eleven meters. With this result we went into the half-time break.

Barreiro takes care of the preliminary decision

After the break, Nagelsmann brought in two fresh players in Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sane for Goretzka and Sabitzer. Lewandowski almost made it 2-2 in the 49th minute, but Hack saved in dire need. Just when it looked like Bayern would gain more access to the game, Barreiro shocked Bayern again in the 57th to make it 3-1.

Despite the comfortable lead, the Rheinhessen didn’t give up. Burkardt had a great chance to make it 4-1 from ten meters out in the 61st minute. In the 71st Onisiwo put the ball on the crossbar from almost 18 meters. In the end it was “only” 1:3 and the deserved defeat for FCB.

For Bayern, things continue on May 8th, when the Munich team will play their last home game of the season against VfB Stuttgart and receive the championship trophy in their home Allianz Arena.
