It was last hinted at, now it’s official: Erik ten Hag will take over Manchester United for the new season. The Dutchman will succeed Ralf Rangnick and is faced with great expectations.
Dhe Dutchman Erik ten Hag will be the new coach at Manchester United after the current football season. The English record champions confirmed this on Thursday.
Accordingly, the 52-year-old, who will train Ajax Amsterdam until the end of the season, will succeed interim coach Ralf Rangnick from summer and should take over the office until summer 2025.
British media had previously reported Man United’s negotiations with Ajax Amsterdam. According to information from the “Guardian”, Ajax will receive a transfer fee of two million euros. Rangnick is said to continue working as a consultant for Man United after his coaching job at Old Trafford. His contract runs until 2024.
The record champions are currently in a low form and are in danger of missing out on qualifying for the Champions League. On Tuesday, the weakened Red Devils lost 4-0 to their arch-rivals Liverpool. Rangnick then called for extensive changes in the club’s transfer policy.
Manchester United before rebuilding
The expectations of ten Hag are high. The Dutchman, who won two championships with Ajax and has good chances of a third before his move, should make the troubled traditional club a football power again. He is the fifth manager in nine years at Man United, who won the last of 20 league titles in 2013 – their last season under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
“There has to be reconstruction for the future,” Rangnick, who is to advise United on personnel issues, recently emphasized to the BBC. Creating a new structure is “not rocket science,” emphasized Rangnick. “When you know what football you want to play and what profiles you want for each position, then it’s all about finding the players and convincing them to come along.”
