Jürgen Klopp is facing a historic triumph with Liverpool FC. So far, the German has always emphasized that, despite all the successes, he does not intend to extend his contract. This decision could now become obsolete.
Jürgen Klopp may remain Liverpool FC coach beyond 2024. As several media reports, the top English football club wants to start contract talks with the German star coach.
Originally, the former Dortmund champion coach had announced his departure for 2024 after nine successful years in Liverpool. Just a few weeks ago he explained: “My plan is that I will stay until 2024, and then it will be: thank you very much!” And further: “I love what I do. But I’ve said it a few times: there has to be something else in the world than just thinking about very talented, good-looking and fantastically nice footballers.”
Now there are apparently signals from Klopp that he can still imagine a longer engagement. Two grandstand guests speak for this at the home game on Wednesday evening.
Mike Gordon, President of the American club owner Fenway Sports Group, had traveled to the semi-final first leg of the Champions League against Villarreal (2-0). The businessman had already negotiated the last contract with Klopp in 2019. Mark Kosicke, the coach’s advisor, was also in the stands during the game against the Spaniards.

Klopp has been the Reds manager since 2015. During this time he led the club back to the top of Europe. In 2019 he won the Champions League with Liverpool, in 2020 the first championship in 30 years. This year even the historic title four-pack beckons. Liverpool have already won the League Cup, have reached the FA Cup final against Chelsea and coach Thomas Tuchel, and in the Premier League Liverpool are just a point behind long-time rivals Manchester City.
‘Right attitude’ – Liverpool stay on their heels to Manchester City
Liverpool remain hot on their heels for Manchester City in the Premier League title race. Team manager Jürgen Klopp’s side moved back up to the top of the table by beating local rivals FC Everton. Klopp particularly praised the effective substitutions after the game.
According to reports, Klopp is said to have drawn new energy and energy for a longer-term commitment from Liverpool’s strong season. Should Klopp extend his tenure, he would be the longest reigning Liverpool coach since legendary Bill Shankly, who coached the Reds from 1959 to 1974.
Most recently, Klopp extended his contract in 2019 after Liverpool won the Champions League title in the final against league competitor Tottenham Hotspur (2-0). Now he could move into the big final again – Tuesday is the second leg in Villarreal.
